ABSTRACT: "Jouvay versus Vidé en Pyjama"

During the colonial times, the French disembarked in the French Caribbean in 1635 and established themselves there.  In 1783, they also migrated to Trinidad where they implemented their culture and traditions.  Today, both Martinique and Trinidad share a common festival known as Carnival.  It is important to note that this event is celebrated before the Lenten season due to the fact that these territories are predominantly Catholic.  The current article provides an insight into the origins of both Jouvay and the Vidé en pyjama (Jumping in pyjama) celebrations.  Many revelers wake up early and enjoy themselves behind various bands.  The present article discusses the origins of both Jouvay and the Vidé en  pyjama.  It seeks to compare and contrast the two events.
